Tips for Keeping Your Trees Healthy and Protected during the Summer
Summer is here once more. For you, it's a time for some fun in the sun with friends and family. It's also a time to give your trees a little more attention than you did during the spring. After all, the intense summer heat can do some serious damage to your Northeast Ohio trees, so you need to follow these instructions in order to keep your trees standing strong all summer long:
Water Them Sufficiently – Yet Appropriately
Okay, maybe this one goes without saying, but sufficiently watering your trees is key to keeping them healthy and thriving during the hot summer months. How much is enough water, though? The standard is about five gallons of water per inch of your trees diameter.
Keep in mind, though, that while an irrigation system can be a helpful tool for watering your trees, you shouldn't rely on it, as an irrigation system doesn't offer the best water saturation. Instead, make time to water your trees the old-fashioned way with a hose when need be.
Use the Right Amount of Mulch
Smaller, developing trees are more susceptible to the negative effects of extreme heat than fully developed trees are. So, those smaller trees need a little extra care from you to ensure they make it through the summer healthy and thriving. Oftentimes, this little extra care comes in the form of mulch.
Mulch will help to protect your small trees from the excessive heat while also helping to prevent water loss. Of course, to get the full effects of the benefits that mulch offers, you need to use the right amount of it, as too much can attract insects and not enough can be ineffective. So, just stick to about a four-foot diameter around the base for the best results.
Assess Your Trees after the Summer
So, you've made it through another brutal summer, and you've given your trees the care they needed to get through it with you. You're all done now, right? Not quite right. Now is the time for you to assess your trees' condition and make sure to get them back into the best shape.
Really, you can expect to get a fertilization treatment to give your trees back some of the nutrients that they'd likely lost during the summer. You should also take the time to set up some professional winter tree care to help your trees get through the colder months that are coming on.
